Ever wondered how to kill weeds permanently? Many of our customers ask us what is the best weed killer for lawns and that is because they want the weeds gone for good or simply because they worry if they use the wrong weed killer, they may possibly end up harming their lawn and garden beds.
As a landscaper, I use a couple on my everyday job, and I am here to share some tips that as a homeowner you may enjoy.
Weeds, Weeds, go away...
So what is the best weed killer?
I like to use products that have DICHLORO-PHENOXYACETIC ACID like ‘2, 4-D’.
Depending on what you are trying to get rid off on your lawn, will determine which weed killer to use.
There are products that kill ALL vegetation like ‘Round-Up’ and other products only Kill Weeds without harming the lawn.
Vegetation Control
Now there are times where you DO want to kill all the vegetation.
For example, when there are invasive vines around the fence or my ultimate favorite, Poison Ivy.
Poison Ivy is one of the worst to deal with.
It is not because they are hard to remove, but because if you touch the oil in the Ivy by mistake….ohhh...that is not a pretty sight.
You could be dealing with itchy rashes for days. Been there and done that.
For Poison Ivy, I recommend using ‘Vegetation Control.’
How to Kill Weeds on Flower Beds?
Another tip I tell homeowners is that when there are weeds in the flower beds, it is just best to pull them by hand.
Yes, it is tedious and laborious, but it is the best in my opinion.
However, if you decide to use Weed Killer, even if it is a product that has DICHLORO-PHENOXYACETIC ACID like ‘2, 4-D’, you may still run the risk of killing the flowers if the product makes contact with them. So be very careful.
Products like ‘2, 4-D’ are meant to protect lawns, but not necessarily flowers.
How to Get Rid of Weeds on Concrete?
In that case, I would use Vegetation Control to kill the weeds and grass that are coming through those ugly concrete cracks.
Please do not use any old weed prevention product, because it will not kill the grass that comes with the weeds, so you will get stuck with grass coming through the cracks, even though the weeds are dead.
How long does it take for the weeds to die?
It takes 7-10 days for the weeds to start seeing results. By two weeks, you will see the weeds turn brown, meaning they are dead.
What should I do when the weeds turn brown or die?
In that case, you can either let them sit there on the grass and let them go back to the soil. This can help your lawn’s health since it will act as a fertilizer.
Or if the weeds are brown in the CONCRETE, another option would be to weed-eat them to get rid of the dead weeds faster than nature would.
When to Apply Weed Killer?
Apply weed treatment AFTER mowing, not before mowing. Does it make a difference? Yes, it does.
When the treatment is applied, you add a layer to the lawn that will only affect weeds. If we mow right after using this layer, then we remove it with the grass cut, making it ineffective to do its job to kill weeds.
So, remember to always apply this AFTER mowing and let it work for 7-10 days. Do not cut the grass again until this time has passed.
Check the Weather Channel
Another tip is to check the weather and ensure we do not have rain in at least two days. I know the weather forecast is constantly changing on us, but it is best practice to do this when there is no foreseen rain coming soon. That way, this layer or application of weed killer is not going to be washed away.
REMEMBER
Weeds are natural and will always come back with high temperature weather or when the lawn does not have a healthy pH.
All we can do as homeowners and landscapers is to deter the amount of weeds that grow and kill the ones that come through everytime we mow the lawn.
